Program Highlights & Contact InformationCity College of New YorkIn July 2007, The 2-week City College MGI/GU Summer Math Academy provided intense classroom instruction in algebra, geometry and probability to struggling math students. The program prepared the students for the challenges of 8th-grade math through rigorous lessons that included hands-on activities, problem solving, and math games. Students also took two educational field trips to the Sony Wonder Technology Laboratory and the American Museum of Natural History. The field trips enhanced their knowledge of mathematics, technology, physics, and careers in science. Hunter CollegeIn July 2007, the 2-week Hunter College summer program entitled The Lifecycle of a Nike Gym Shoe focused on fashion merchandising and manufacturing. Thirty 7th and 8th-grade students improved their literacy skills while exploring how Nike gym shoes are designed, manufactured, and advertised. The program kept students moving! They learned basic interviewing skills and conducted person-on-the-street interviews in midtown Manhattan to learn where most clothing and shoes are made. They mapped out their results and created blogs about their findings at http://www.nycore.org/mgi/mgi.html. Students visited the Cooper Hewitt Museum to learn about responsible product design and met with activist and documentary filmmaker Jim Keady to learn about working and living conditions of factory workers in the third world. Hostos Community CollegeHostos Community College added the Dr. Mary E. Walker Medical Science Academy as a new partner school in fall 2007. A cohort of 60 6th-grade students are now part of MGI/GU. In November 2007, students from Hostos Lincoln Academy and the Dr. Mary E. Walker Medical Science Academy visited New York University. NYU Latino and African American student organizations held panels on the college experience and sponsored a luncheon for visiting MGI/GU students.The visit included a campus tour as well as college preparation trivia games for prizes. In May 2007, MGI/GU parents participated in a 4-part series of parent workshops, which addressed NYCDOE promotion requirements, early planning for college, developmental changes in adolescents and learning how to communicate with your child, and internet safety. Queens CollegeIn November 2007, Queens College hosted students and faculty from the Reniassance Charter school on campus to celebrate the culminination of "Rensizzle," a 10-day student/teacher collaboration focused on arts, social issues, academic and special interest topics selected by students. More than 300 students and their collaborating teachers shared final presentations and performances with parents and other guests. Lehman CollegeIn July 2007, the 3-week Lehman College MGI/GEAR UP Summer Academy focused on web design and career/college exploration through digital photography. Forty rising 8th-grade students participated in daily classes in each discipline and created a website documenting their summer experience. Students also visited the Bronx Zoo and participated in swimming and gym activities every afternoon. Parents attended an end-of-program awards ceremony. IN October and November 2007, 50 students from East Bronx Academy, In-Tech Academy and South Bronx Preparatory spent six weeks in the Lehman's Saturday Academy. The program included academic enrichment and early college awareness programs at the Lehman's campus. Students took one of three, three-hour courses: Chinese Language & Culture, Robotics, or Web Design. Parents attended final presentations and were given tours of campus by their children.
