Middle School Math Team Project (MGMTP)CUNY Collaborative Programs piloted the Middle School Math Team Project (MGMTP) at CUNY Affiliated and Middle Grades Initiative/GEAR UP partner schools in spring 2008. The program is designed to initiate promising, but under-achieving middle school students into the world of math team contest problems in order to stimulate interest and develop confidence in mathematics. Teams of 6th-8th grade students work with a teacher/coach after school to practice mock-competition problems. Teams will ready themselves for a finals event to be hosted by the Macaulay Honors College in June 2008. MGMTP hopes to increase the number of students who will be eligible for admission to the University’s selective programs and also successfully complete math-dependent programs of study. The program was developed in consultation with Danny Jaye, former Assistant Principal of Mathematics at Stuyvesant High School and Executive Director of the New York City Math League. Teacher/coaches and other affiliated staff can access problems of the week and other resources via our bulletin board. |
